The latest CFS Rethinking Retirement report suggests confidence is shaped by visibility over what comes next.
The retirement industry has traditionally focused on accumulation: how much has been saved, what return has been generated, and what income might be supported throughout retirement.
Those questions remain fundamental. But the CFS Rethinking Retirement 2026 report suggests another factor is becoming increasingly important in how Australians experience retirement: certainty.
The research found retirement concerns remain widespread. More than half of Australians worry they will not have enough money to live comfortably in retirement. Many are also concerned about unexpected health or aged care costs, while more than one-third worry about outliving super savings.
What is notable is that these concerns persist even as retirement preparedness has improved over recent years.
The data suggests retirement confidence is influenced not only by the amount people have accumulated, but by how certain they feel about what happens next.
This becomes particularly clear when comparing Australians who feel prepared with those who do not. More than half of Australians who feel unprepared for retirement say they worry about it. Among those who feel prepared, that figure falls to 15%.
That contrast is significant. Preparedness appears to shape the way people perceive their future.
The findings also align with one of the broader themes emerging from the report: retirement is becoming increasingly personal. Australians are no longer moving through a uniform retirement journey. Expectations around retirement age, lifestyle, income needs and flexibility are becoming more individualised.
As a result, understanding what retirement could look like in practice may be becoming just as important as understanding balances and returns.
This is where retirement income strategies become particularly relevant. Greater visibility over future income, spending capacity and sustainability can help clients understand the trade-offs between flexibility, certainty and growth.
The CFS Retirement Income Optimiser has a natural connection to this theme because it is designed to support future lifetime income strategies while preserving flexibility during accumulation. Pension Bonus can also be relevant at the point of transition, where eligible clients may receive a one-off benefit when moving from CFS super into a CFS pension.
The objective is not to remove uncertainty altogether. Retirement will always involve changing circumstances, markets and regulation. The research does suggest, however, that helping Australians feel more certain about their pathway may be as valuable as helping them accumulate more wealth.
