Changes to buy/sell spreads May 2020

Due to recent and sustained market volatility, there have been significant changes to market transaction costs when buying or selling securities, particularly in fixed income markets.

Colonial First State has therefore adjusted the buy/sell spreads on a number of investment options to reflect these changes in costs.

The ‘sell’ spreads have increased to reflect the estimated transaction costs a member will incur to transact on these investment options. The sell spreads are now larger than the buy spreads and this approach will have the fairest outcome for all members and will better allocate transactions costs to those members transacting on these investment options.

The buy/sell spreads are changing for the investment options, where applicable, to

If you intend to buy or sell units in these options, you need to be aware of the higher transaction costs arising from current market conditions, and the impact on the spreads of the option.

What’s a buy/sell spread?
Whenever you switch between investment options – it means you’re selling assets from one option, and buying assets in another (such as shares or listed property).

And when you buy or sell these assets, you incur transaction costs. The ‘buy/sell spread’ reflects the transaction costs of buying or selling the assets in the investment option. The buy/sell spread includes the transaction costs an investment option incurs by trading securities, such as brokerage and stamp duty. This buy/sell spread applies whether you have a super, pension or investment account.

The buy/sell spread in an option may move up or down in line with a number of factors, including sustained changes in market transaction costs. Colonial First State has the discretion to adjust the buy-sell spread in such circumstances.

What’s the purpose of a buy/sell spread?
The buy/sell spread facilitates fairer outcomes across all members in an investment option, by allocating the transaction costs to the members that buy or sell units rather than the other members.

The recent market volatility
Volatility in fixed income markets has increased dramatically recently and trading costs have consequently risen significantly. We believe that the adjustment to the buy/sell spreads on these options is appropriate, to protect the interests of all members in each of those options.

Does Colonial First State benefit financially from this change?
The buy/sell spreads are not paid to Colonial First State and does not profit from this change.
