The decade before retirement is a critical planning window where advisers can help clients turn growing concerns and expectations into a clear, achievable retirement strategy.
For many Australians, ages 50-59 are where retirement becomes tangible and concern intensifies.
The decade before retirement is a distinctive planning window. Retirement is close enough to feel tangible, but still far enough away for strategy decisions to potentially make a meaningful difference.
The CFS Rethinking Retirement 2026 report found 61% of Australians aged 50-59 worry they will not have enough money to live comfortably in retirement.
That finding sits alongside broader concerns in the report: 54% of Australians worry about not having enough money to live comfortably, 50% worry about unexpected health or aged care costs, and 37% worry about outliving their super savings.
The 50-59 decade is also where retirement expectations may become more concrete. The client may be thinking about when to stop work, whether to reduce hours, how long savings may last, whether the Age Pension will form part of the picture, and whether their preferred lifestyle is realistic.
The report’s aspiration gap provides additional context. Australians would like to retire at 62, but expect 66 is more realistic.
For many clients, the years before retirement are where that gap is interrogated: what can be changed, what trade-offs are acceptable, and what risks need to be managed?
The research also suggests preparedness can materially change how retirement feels. More than half of Australians who feel unprepared worry about retirement, compared with only 15% of those who feel prepared.
This points to the value of planning that is not limited to account balances. Income visibility, Centrelink assumptions, sequencing risk, longevity risk, estate planning and aged care considerations may all become important in the same period.
The advice opportunity is not to introduce complexity, but to organise it.
CFS's Retirement Income Optimiser may be relevant here because it's designed to preserve future strategy optionality before retirement, particularly where lifetime income and Age Pension outcomes may form part of the future discussion.
The decade before retirement is not simply a countdown. It's a critical window for building clarity, testing assumptions and preparing clients for the choices that may define retirement outcomes.
In that sense, age 50-59 is not late-stage planning. It is where retirement planning becomes real.
