As many Australians struggle with the complexity of super and retirement planning, advisers can play an important role in turning information into clear, actionable decisions.
The issue is not interest alone. The latest CFS Rethinking Retirement report points to cognitive load and decision friction.
The CFS Rethinking Retirement 2026 report suggests the barriers to super engagement are less about indifference and more about complexity.
Among Australians who have not recently engaged with their superannuation, 36% say it feels too complicated. A further 27% say they do not know where to start, while 24% cite lack of time. Around 29% say they trust their fund to take care of everything.
These responses point to a practical reality advisers see often: super is important, but the decisions surrounding it can feel difficult to sequence.
The report describes this as cognitive load and perceived complexity. That framing matters because it shifts the conversation from education alone to usability, confidence and decision design.
Information is abundant. The harder task is helping people understand which information applies to them, what decisions are material, and what can reasonably be reviewed later.
The challenge is particularly relevant as retirement planning becomes more integrated. Contributions, investment options, account-based pensions, longevity solutions, Centrelink treatment, tax, aged care and estate planning all intersect. The client does not necessarily need every answer at once, but they do need a clearer path through the choices.
The report also found Australians with a financial adviser are more confident managing their superannuation than those without one, with confidence levels of 82% compared with 69%.
That difference is not surprising, but it is useful. It supports the role of advice in converting complexity into a structured decision-making process.
The same point applies to retirement income. More choice is valuable only when it can be organised around the client’s objectives, constraints and preference for flexibility or certainty.
This is where CFS Retirement Advantage™ has a natural role to play. Pension Bonus can provide a more tangible transition benefit for eligible clients moving from CFS super to CFS pension. Retirement Income Optimiser can preserve future lifetime income strategy options while clients remain in super, without requiring an early irreversible decision.
The research does not suggest complexity can be removed from retirement planning. It does suggest that confidence improves when people have a framework for navigating it.
In that sense, engagement is not just about getting people to look at their super. It is about helping them understand what matters next.
For clients seeking greater clarity around retirement income, strategies that combine retirement planning with income certainty may help support confidence alongside financial outcomes.
CFS Retirement Solutions bring together products, tools, specialist support and education to help advisers navigate the transition to and through retirement. Designed to support greater certainty, flexibility and choice, the suite helps advisers build retirement strategies tailored to each client's goals, circumstances and evolving needs.
