Taking an expressly long-term approach to investing, the team seeks out and invests in exceptional companies that have the potential to grow to many times their current size. Baillie Gifford’s rigorous process of fundamental analysis and proprietary research are core to a successful, long-term, bottom-up investment approach. This allows the business to exploit global opportunities over periods of, typically, five years or more.

Mark Urquhart

Investment Manager, Partner
  • Mark has been with Baillie Gifford since 1996, starting as an investment manager in the Japanese Equity Team. He joined our Long Term Global Growth Team in 2003 when it was established, and became a partner in 2004.
    Mark has a BA in Philosophy, Politics and Economics from Oxford University and was a Kennedy Scholar at Harvard in 1993 before completing a PhD in politics at the University of Edinburgh in 1996.

 

Tom Slater

Investment Manager, Partner
  • Tom joined Baillie Gifford in 2000, working in Developed Asia and UK Equity Teams before joining the Long Term Global Growth Team at the start of 2009. Tom became a Partner in the firm in 2012, while in 2015 Tom was appointed Head of the North American Equities Team and is a decision maker on Long Term Global Growth portfolios.

    Tom graduated BSc in Computer Science with Mathematics from the University of Edinburgh in 2000.

 

James Anderson

  • James joined Baillie Gifford in 1983 and became a Partner in 1987, heading up European Equity team until 2003 when he co-founded our Long Term Global Growth strategy.

    James is a member of the Firm’s Strategic Leadership GroupHe has a BA in History from Oxford University and gained an MA in International Affairs in 1982. He is a Trustee of the Johns Hopkins University.

 
 
 

John Macdougall

  • John MacDougall joined Baillie Gifford in 2006, moving from the Japanese Specialist team to the Global Discovery team in 2011.

    He graduated with a BA in Ancient & Modern History from Oxford University in 2000 and is a CFA Charterholder.
